We invited top designers to share about the carpet trends we can expect to see in 2020. Read on for their thoughts, which include ideas to steal for your own space.

BROADLOOMS

"Broadlooms are such an underrated type of carpet. Usually composed of wool or a wool blend, they are ideal for families because they can stand up to just about anything. They come in a large assortment of colors and patterns, so they can add a big dose of style to any space. I tend to use them in informal family rooms and bedrooms where clients want something soft underfoot."

NATURAL FIBERS

"Natural fibers like sisal continue to be a trend in rugs, and we're now seeing variations on the trend, like sisal woven with jute or wool. Also, we're seeing many clients opt for indoor-outdoor rugs, which have seen a drastic improvement in quality of late. Now, indoor-outdoor rugs, especially those by Perennials, are as soft and versatile as indoor options."

TONAL LAYERING

"Wall-to-wall carpet can run the risk of looking dated, but in 2020, I foresee designers layering rugs on top of carpet to add interest and warmth. Committing to a tone-on-tone color palette will keep spaces from appearing too busy and allow the other furnishings to shine."

NEUTRAL HUES

"The last few years have given us bold colors and patterns in rugs and carpets, but this next year we’ll be seeing more earth-toned, neutral colors with monochromatic designs in patterns and textures. For example, Magnolia Home offers beautiful rugs like this Moroccan-influenced design that was meticulously crafted by skilled artisans."

MOROCCAN STYLES

"I still love the woven mat rugs from Mauritania that you find in Morocco. They are casual, elegant, and not too precious. Also, I buy a lot of super-heavy Ralli blankets that double as patched rugs and you can collage them together for fun and change them around when you get bored."

DHURRIE RUGS

"Custom Dhurrie rugs from Guinevere in London!!! Yummy, they go anywhere even on top of carpet. They’re a well priced chic way to create a cozier, “layered” look, which I adore."

PATTERNED AREA RUGS

"When it comes to area rugs, I love what we're seeing as far as layered patterns and colors. No longer does a bold rug require subdued furniture—more can definitely be more." 

HAND-CRAFTED DESIGNS

"We're seeing a big push toward the idea of longevity. Our clients want to fill their homes with things that will literally last for generations. Hand-crafted, custom rugs have always been made this way, by artisans well-versed in skills passed down through generations; what's new is that clients are beginning to care a lot more about that than they used to."
